RECENT SAN FRANCISCO MAYORS

2011 Edwin Mah Lee

Former City Administrator Ed Lee was unanimously appointed mayor by the Board of Supervisors on January 11, 2011 to serve the remainder of former mayor Gavin Newsom’s term after he resigned to become California’s Lieutenant Governor. Mayor Lee then won a second full term on November 8, 2011. He is the city’s first Asian American mayor.

Gavin Newsom was a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors beginning in 1997, serving in both a Citywide and the District 2 seat. He had worked as an entrepreneur and businessman before serving in office. He won the mayor’s office in the 2003 race and was subsequently re-elected to his second term in November of 2007.

1995 Willie Lewis Brown, Jr.

Willie Brown was a member of the California Assembly for 31 years and its speaker for 14 years, the longest service in that position in the State’s history, before his December 1995 election as mayor. Mayor Willie Brown was re-elected in 1999 to his second term.

Frank Jordan was a career police officer, becoming police chief, and then retiring before he was elected Mayor.

Art Agnos was a member of the State Assembly before becoming mayor.

Dianne Feinstein was a Supervisor for nine years, served as Board President before becoming mayor upon the assassination. She is now the senior United States Senator from California.

1975 George Moscone

George Moscone, former member of the Board and former State Senator, was killed in his office on November 27, 1978, by resigned Supervisor Dan White, who then killed Supervisor Harvey Milk a few minutes later.

Joe Alioto for many years was a prominent San Francisco attorney. He was the father of former Supervisor Angela Alioto.

1963 John Francis Shelley

John Francis Shelley was a former Congressman, was the husband of Thelma Shelley, long time General Manager of the War Memorial and Performing Arts Center, and the father of former Supervisor Kevin Shelley.

1959 George Christopher

George Christopher served two terms. He convinced the New York Giants to move to San Francisco.
